Wednesday 15th October 2014: Understanding and Supporting Children with Autism and Social Communication Difficulties in the Early Years Setting

This course is suitable for all staff working in an Early Years setting. It will include:
An introduction to Autism including an "Autism Experience"
Practical strategies to aid social interaction and communication in Early Years Settings
An introduction to visual structure
Monday 20th October 2014: Preventing and Managing Challenging Behaviour with Pupils on the Autism Spectrum

Suitable for all school staff from KS1 to KS4. The course will help delegates develop a greater understanding of the challenges faced by pupils on the Autism spectrum in the school environment and will provide practical strategies to prevent and manage resulting challenging behaviour.
Thursday 13th November: Developing Social Interaction

This course is suitable for school staff working with pupils on the Autism Spectrum or who have similar Social Communication difficulties. It focusses on:
Understanding the social communication challenges of pupils
Implementing social skills programmes
An introduction to Social Thinking resources
An introduction to Social Stories and Comic Strip Conversations

Monday 1st December: Implementing Visual Structure
This practical course is suitable for all staff teaching and supporting Primary school pupils with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder.
Delegates will have the opportunity to put theory into practice and will include:
Using a workstation
Successful use of schedules and visual prompts
Developing tray tasks and work systems
Using task lists

A two day course for teachers, support assistants and SENCo’s

Run with educational psychologist Philip Whitaker, this course provides a wide range of practical ideas and strategies, all based on insight into the unique learning style and challenges experienced  by children with ASD.
The course is suitable for anyone working with students with an ASD; whether new to the field or seeking to broaden their understanding and skills.

This Course will Cover:


  • Social Stories are a gentle, positive and effective way to help children learn about the missing piece of the social jigsaw, prepare them for new situations and introduce helpful strategies. They are written to suit the age and ability of each child using language that is meaningful to them.
  • Comic Strip Conversations are an effective tool to help unpick social misunderstandings with a child in a concrete, visual way. They can help the young person to understand the perspective of others and think of an alternative scenario for that situation.

Transport and Autism Links

Today I was interviewed by BBC Radio Northampton about the experiences of people with autism on public transport. I noted that the National Autistic Society had two film clips on the subject. I will list the links below - and I will add the iplayer link to the interview when it is up and running. It was at the very end of Helen Blaby's lunchtime show today.
